The Dog and I ~ Dog Grooming Products
Dog Soap and Canine Cologne Review
About The Dog and I
As with many things I buy for the dogs, I first spotted The Dog and I on social media (where else?). Their dog soap was the first product I saw and, to be honest, I was sceptical about it. I remember thinking that I didn’t think a bar of soap would be a great idea for washing dog fur, let alone a handmade, 100% natural ingredients soap and what about the lather?
However, I liked The Dog and I’s company ethos. They strive to be an eco-friendly company and are keen to eradicate the use of plastic bottles, as are we. So I was keen to give the soap a test, especially after writing my blog with tips on how to be an environmentally friendly dog owner (click here to read it).
We love our environment and its preservation is important to us.
Handmade In Dorset
Regular readers will know that I love to support small business, particularly British brands. All of The Dog and I’s products are handmade in Dorset, yes handmade! They do their best to support other small businesses by sourcing as much of their ingredients and packaging locally.
They love dogs, as much as we love dogs. They want the best for their dogs, just as we do too. So, none of their products are tested on animals until the owner is 100% happy with the product and she has tested it on herself, so yes you can use it too!
Handmade Dog Grooming Products
There are 3 soaps made by The Dog and I, all of which are made with 100% ethically sourced, coconut oil and are paraben, SLS and SLES free. Two are scented using essential oils* and the other is unperfumed;
- 100% Coconut Oil Dog Soap Unperfumed
- 100% Coconut Oil Dog Soap with Lavender Oil and Poppy Seeds; and
- 100% Coconut Oil Dog Soap with Lemongrass, Citronella, Peppermint & Spearmint Essential Oils
I bought the Lemongrass scented soap aka the ‘bug buster’, because ‘the pure essential oils have been specifically selected for their insect repelling properties’ and I am a big fan of fresh, citrus smells.
Using The Soap
I needn’t have worried about the lather (I love a good lather, but I don’t like the chemicals used in shampoos etc that create the lather, they are very drying for the skin) as coconut oil gives a high foaming and highly cleansing soap. Let me tell you, it really does, I was amazed at how quickly the soap lathered up and it smells divine!
This soap is so easy to use, when you receive your soap, it comes with easy instructions. If you follow them, you won’t go wrong, as you can see from our time-lapse video.
I am so impressed with the soap, it made washing our two dogs so less stressful, it was definitely a quicker process. This meant the dogs were less concerned and because you have the soap in your hand, you aren’t always leaning to get more shampoo, whilst trying to stop your dog from shaking and covering you in water!
I am converted to dog soap for bathing our dogs now, I love it and would definitely recommend it, but do check out the advice on The Dog and I’s website. For dogs whose coat requires a different approach, they also have dog shampoo and condition, again all handmade and natural ingredients.
The Canine Cologne
On the same order, I bought the canine cologne in ‘Walking on Sunshine’, it’s a similar, citrus smell to the soap, so I thought they would work well together. It’s fresh, light and not overpowering! I also read that it may help prevent tick bites and anything natural to help prevent tick bites is worth a try. Tick bites seem to be worse this year because of the heat wave we are experiencing in the UK.
There are two scents; Walking on Sunshine and Under the Boardwalk, which is a warm, woody scent.
Both options are ‘handmade, alcohol free colognes which have been carefully developed to freshen your dog using manuka honey floral water and only scented with essential oils.
I loved this product as well, the smell is just so refreshing! It’s great to use between washes, especially as I don’t like to wash our dogs too often. You can also spritz on their bed or in the car, to get rid of that damp dog smell!
The Dog and I also make natural paw balm, skin salve, shampoo and conditioner. We haven’t tried these products but if they are anything like the dog soap and canine cologne then I am sure they are great products, as well as being homemade and 100% natural.
I really do love these products, I love that it is a small, British company, everything is handmade and 100% natural. It is great to find a product that is not only good for our dogs but actually works! I will definitely buy this again! What do you think about using a dog soap instead of shampoo for your dog?
There are approximately 8.5 million dogs in the UK. If just 1% of those used a bar of soap instead of a bottle of shampoo, that would be 85,000 less plastic bottles…
…so why wouldn’t you swap to soap?
