The Dog and I ~ Dog Soap Bar and Dog Cologne Review

In this dog shampoo bar and dog cologne product review, I share my thoughts and experience on using two of The Dog and I’s natural dog grooming products.

About The Dog and I

As with many things I buy for the dogs, I first spotted The Dog and I on social media, where else?!

Their dog soap was the first product I saw and, to be honest, I was sceptical about it. I remember thinking that I didn’t think a bar of soap would be a great idea for washing dog fur, let alone a handmade, 100% natural ingredients soap. Would it even lather?

However, I liked The Dog and I’s company ethos. They strive to be an eco-friendly company and are keen to eradicate the use of plastic bottles, as are we. So I was keen to give the dog soap bar a test, especially after writing my blog with tips on how to be an environmentally friendly dog owner.

We love our environment and its preservation is important to us.

Handmade Dog Soap from Dorset

Regular readers will know that I love to support small businesses, particularly British dog brands. All of The Dog and I’s products are handmade in Dorset, yes handmade! They do their best to support other small businesses by sourcing as much of their ingredients and packaging locally too.

They love dogs, as much as we love dogs. They want the best for their dogs, just as we do. So, none of their products are tested on animals until the owner is 100% happy with the product and has tested it on herself. Yes, you can use it too!

The Dog Soap Bar

There are 3 dog soaps made by The Dog and I, all of which are made with 100% ethically sourced, coconut oil and are paraben, SLS and SLES free.

Two are scented using essential oils* and the other is unperfumed;

  • 100% Coconut Oil Dog Soap Unperfumed
  • 100% Coconut Oil Dog Soap with Lavender Oil and Poppy Seeds; and
  • 100% Coconut Oil Dog Soap with Lemongrass, Citronella, Peppermint & Spearmint Essential Oils

You can buy all three soap bars here and see which one is your favourite!

I bought the Lemongrass scented soap aka the ‘bug buster’ first, because ‘the pure essential oils have been specifically selected for their insect repelling properties and I am a big fan of fresh, citrus smells. You can read more about tick prevention here – I’m all for a natural insect repellant for dogs!

Using The Dog Soap Bar

I needn’t have worried about the lather (I love a good lather, but I don’t like the chemicals used in dog shampoos that create the lather, they are very drying for the skin.) Coconut oil gives a high foaming and highly cleansing soap and is kind to your dog’s skin in the process.

Let me tell you, it really does lather! I was amazed at how quickly the soap lathered up and it smells divine too!

This soap bar is so easy to use. When you receive your soap, it comes with easy to follow instructions. If you follow them, you won’t go wrong, as you can see from our time-lapse video below.

I am so impressed with the soap, it made washing our two dogs much less stressful and it was definitely a quicker process. The dogs were less concerned about bath time, and because you have the soap in your hand, you aren’t always leaning to get more shampoo, whilst trying to stop your dog from shaking and covering you in water!

I am converted to dog soap for washing our dogs now. I love it and would definitely recommend it.

The Dog Cologne – a natural dog deodoriser spray

On the same order, I bought the dog cologne in ‘Walking on Sunshine’, it’s a similar, citrus smell to the soap, so I thought they would work well together.

It’s fresh, light and not overpowering! I also read that it may help prevent tick bites and anything natural to help prevent tick bites is well worth a try.

There are two scents; Walking on Sunshine and Under the Boardwalk, which is a warm and woody scent.

Both options are ‘handmade, alcohol-free dog colognes that have been carefully developed to freshen your dog using manuka honey floral water and they’re scented with only essential oils.

I loved this product, the smell is just so refreshing! It’s great to use between washes, especially as I don’t like to wash our dogs too often. You can also spritz on their bed or in the car, to get rid of that damp dog smell!

Other Dog and I Natural Dog Grooming Products

The Dog and I also make natural dog paw balm, skin soothing salve, and dog shampoo and conditioner.

I think these natural dog grooming products are so fantastic that I now stock them in our shop for dog lovers!

I really do love these products. I love that it’s a small, British company, everything is handmade and 100% natural. It is great to find a product that is not only good for our dogs but actually works!

There are approximately 8.5 million dogs in the UK. If just 1% of those used a bar of soap instead of a bottle of shampoo, that would be 85,000 less plastic bottles…

…so why wouldn’t you swap to soap?

* PLEASE DO NOT USE ESSENTIAL OILS ON CATS, PREGNANT BITCHES OR PUPPIES UNDER 14 WEEKS

I have never heard of this brand, but I like the sound of it. Like you I prefer to support local business when possible, and I too live in England. I don’t know about where you live, but where I am there’s no choice in the pet supply stores, and some of the products I find online don’t thrill me for various reasons. I never considered the possibility of using a bar of soap on a dog, so that’s interesting. I’m definitely going to check this out, because it just so happens we are out of what we’ve been using and I’ve been wondering what to buy.

I love the idea of home made soap and it looks fantastic, plus I laughed so much at the label. It is important to support small businesses as they deserve it and we all should. I think that is why I do not shop online a lot as I try to find local first

These products sound like a great option. My Bella is skin sensitive so always look for products that have natural ingredients. Need to check this brand.

I love the hand-made soaps; Cookie would seriously frown on the cologne, though. She objects to such strong smells quite strongly. When I try to use some of the natural bug repellents, which generally contain the same or similar combo of essential oils, all she does is “try and escape” the smell. Which can get dangerous when she really loses her mind.

I love their dog washing instructions, I was in fits of laughter. I can SOOO see pup owners doing this (to the sound of some sneaky music too – Yeah I make too many videos!) 100% natural has to be a good thing for a dog.

I’ve used both at times and I don’t have a strong preference. Shampoo is easier to travel with though. I’d like the lavender scented one!

It’s nice that these are natural products and there’s no animal testing. I got a kick out of their instruction card, LOL! Thanks for sharing.

I don’t have a dog so I have no need for this product but love all things eco-friendly and ethically sourced and paraben free. This would make for a great gift too. Great video demonstration too. You are right, it looks pretty easy to use.Who knew doggies have cologne too? That’s pretty neat.

I’m glad to hear you’ve found a product that you’re comfortable using on your dog and that is safe for the environment. If I ever need to bathe my cats, I use baby shampoo. Thankfully, I don’t need to do it often.

These look like great products. I’d be interested in trying the bar of soap. Like you said, I’m always reaching over to get more shampoo. Do they sell it in the states?

The soap sounds like wonderful soap, and I think it is really important to support small businesses. I’m not sure that my dogs would like the cologne, but if it helps prevent ticks, that’s really great!

Love small businesses! And when they make good quality, cute products for our dogs… win! I have been trying out some bar shampoo, lotion, and conditioner for myself as well as a bar soap for my dog. Yay for less plastic!
