Stolen Dogs Ruby & Beetle ~ 28 December 2018, Scottish Borders
The story of stolen dogs Ruby & Beetle is very close to my heart, I have followed it on; social media since Day 1, within Border Terrier facebook groups and watched the Border Terrier community rally round to help raise awareness for this heartbroken family. I have shared the owner’s updates, I’ve shed a tear or two and I’ve felt the anguish, heartbreak and pain the family are going through.
So it is an honour to share Ruby & Beetle’s story, in the hope that it will help raise more awareness, jog someone’s memory or make someone understand the devastation families feel when their dog is stolen or goes missing.
The Day Ruby & Beetle Went Missing
Ruby and Beetle are a pair of female Border Terriers who are aged five and two respectively. Ruby is Beetle’s mum.
They went missing on 28 December 2018 from the Scottish borders.
Ruby is a quiet dog whilst Beetle is a bit more confident and friendly.
Ruby and Beetle were on a Christmas shoot with their gamekeeper owners, and friends, on the day they went missing.
They are very well trained, obedient, dogs who are familiar with shoots and recall to their dedicated whistles from their owners.
During the second last drive however, Ruby and Beetle disappeared out of sight on the Lothian estate. After shouting and whistling, Ruby and Beetle did not return, and their owner, Georgie Bell, was getting concerned. So Georgie stayed to find them as the group moved to the next drive.
She listened down rabbit sets in the wood and went to nearby properties checking outbuildings and talking to the owners to check if they have had seen them.
A Possible Brief Sighting
Whilst walking back across fields, Georgie saw what may have been Ruby walking towards her, although she was some distance away to know for sure. At the same time, the gun shots began again from the shoot and it’s believed Ruby and Beetle may have travelled towards the shots.
This would have taken them to a road, the B6400, where the family believe they were picked up.
The family continued all day and night in their search. They even left their works truck near the woods as Ruby and Beetle love the truck and would get in it if they saw it.
They used a friend’s dog to check holes where they could and used night vision equipment but there was no sign of either Ruby or Beetle.
Over the next few days immediately following their disappearance, the family retraced their steps, used tracking dogs and even dug some of the smaller holes up to check them properly.
Owner, Georgie Bell, said:
“I knew in my heart of hearts that they weren’t in that wood.
I know my clever, smart little dogs and if they could have come home, they would have.”
Extensive Missing Campaign for Stolen Ruby & Beetle
Since December, Georgia and her family have been running an extensive missing campaign.
They have 8000 people in their Facebook group and have raised £10,000 which is being offered as a reward for their safe return.
They’ve been in newspapers, magazines, on radio and TV. The family have paid for adverts, banners and take Ruby and Beetle’s campaign to events.
Georgie added: “Looking for them has become a full-time job. We trawl sites every day and I have written more than 100 blogs which tell the story form my heart.
I believe I have won an audience who have become a force behind me, all trying to help me be reunited with my little dogs. I miss them so much it’s heartbreaking.
Dog theft is the hardest situation that anyone has to endure, it rips the heart out of your home, it engulfs you, takes over your life. You get sucked into a black hole and will do, and try, anything to let people know you are frantically searching for your dogs. It becomes an obsession and you eat, breathe and sleep the nightmare.
Someone, somewhere, must know something. No one is in trouble I would just like any information to try and help me find my little dogs. We just want them home.”
