Cornwall, what does it conjure up for you?
Beaches, surfing, Cornish pasties, Poldark, rugged coastline, wild seas, little coves, pretty harbours, pirates, childhood holidays, life guards, fresh salty air, cream teas, the Eden Project, fish & chips, Doc Martin, rolling green hills and narrow country lanes.
Or memories of happy times. I’m sure this is why so many of us head back there a some point again in our adult life. In 2014 Cornwall attracted approximately 4.3 million staying visitors, so it’s clear a lot of us love Cornwall!
The last time I visited Cornwall was for family holidays, a long, long time ago!
Having seen lots of fab photos of our Instagram doggie friends, having fun on the amazing Cornish beaches, add in that we are addicted to Escape to the Country (it seems everyone wants to escape to Cornwall!) and, that Cornwall features regularly in The Coast magazine (one of my favs!), all helped us decide that our next holiday should be in Cornwall.
We started searching for dog friendly houses to rent, close to year round dog friendly beaches.
We stumbled across, via Google, a website called Perfect Stays. ‘Perfect Stays in Perfect Places‘ is an ‘exclusive collection of stunning homes‘ in Devon and Cornwall.
All the houses on the Perfect Stays website, look spectacular (any one of them could be your dream home!), there is something for everyone. However, when you have dogs, the first ‘advanced search option’ you click on is ‘Dog Friendly’. Anyone with dogs will know that this reduces your choice dramatically!
We didn’t really have any real idea on where in Cornwall we wanted to visit. So starting with the houses that were dog friendly, we began having a good look at them. Our next criteria was to ensure we were near one of Cornwall’s 400 beaches that was dog friendly all year round. You do need to check this as many of them have restrictions between 1 May to 30 September.
The Long Trek There
Finally, after a lot of back and forth, we decided on Tregully house near Constantine Bay (a year round, dog friendly, sandy beach) on the north coast of Cornwall.
This house, looked like our dream forever home (on the website, but we all know that websites can make places look much better than they are in reality). With an open plan kitchen, diner, living area, sliding doors opening to an enclosed garden, even a secret TV room!
I suppose one of the reasons we haven’t been down to Cornwall before is because it seems like such a long way away from London. Obviously, that is attractive to us, because we want to get out of London; time away from the noise, the traffic, the flight path, the pollution and the never-ending sirens. However, a 6 hour journey is never appealing.
So at the end of September we headed down, with the dogs and the trailer, for a week of seafood, peace, beach walks and cream teas.
Luckily, we were able to stop half way, for lunch, with my step-mum and brother. Which after the M25 and M4 (with the M3 closed due to an accident), on Saturday morning was a much-needed and enjoyable stop-off. She cooked us a delicious Persian style chicken and frittata of roasted vegetables, which set us up well for the second half of the journey.
We finally arrived at our home for the week around 6 o’clock, tired, achy but excited to see the house and the beaches of Cornwall!
Tregully House, Constantine Bay
Well…Wow! Tregully House did not disappoint on arrival. A stunning contemporary, newly built home, with fabulous curb appeal.
Going inside, didn’t disappoint either. Beautiful wooden floors and the open plan living area, well for the first time, the photos didn’t do this house justice. Whoever, designed and built it had thought of everything from cosy nights in, to the perfect spaces for family get togethers.
Tregully can sleep up to 12 people, with four double, en suite, bedrooms and a fantastic kids bedroom. So, yes it probably was a bit large for just the two of us, and the dogs, but we never felt we were rattling around in it.
Contemporary Living At Its Best
The design was just so wonderful that we spent most of our time in the open plan living area (much to my husband’s delight because this is the type of layout he would like in our ‘forever’ home, I was/am to be convinced about open plan living). The kitchen was so well equipped, with absolutely everything you could every need for cooking and baking! Huge double sliding doors not only let in lots of light, but beckoned you out into the garden, which wasn’t huge but, again, beautifully designed and totally enclosed, so safe for the dogs.
The utility and wet room area is perfect for dogs and beach life. Using the back door leads into the wet room/cloakroom area, which is all tiled and so, easy to clean off the inevitable sand! This area can be shut off from the kitchen with a clever hidden dog gate, giving the dogs the whole utility/wet room area to sleep in and most importantly washed and dried off in!
The whole feel of the house is light, bright, clean, contemporary and uncluttered with a nod to sea side colours but it is also comfortable and very livable. However, it also has every luxury you would wish for in a home, underfloor heating, Sonos, Blu Ray, Sky TV, Internet access, Playstation and the biggest jacuzzi bath I have ever seen, or been in!
The hidden media room, felt like a private cinema room and the grown-up’s snug, with its large terrace to take in the sunset, has a wood burner, as does the open plan living area. Luckily for us, we had such good weather that, even though we were desperate for a fire, we never had a need to light one. We had many a conversation, discussing how Tregully was our dream home.
Fabulous Location in Cornwall
Tregully is in Constantine Bay, within walking distance to a local shop, that sells everything you could possibly need, a golf course, a surf shop and the beach! The nearest village is St Merryn, where you can find a bakery (delicious Cornish pasties and bread), small supermarket, petrol station, newsagents, a couple of pubs and a few restaurants including; a fish and chip shop (yummy!) and a fabulous find, The Olive Tree a small restaurant with amazing food.
We didn’t want to leave Tregully or Constantine Bay, it really was perfect for us, perfect for the dogs, perfect location and, all in all, a Perfect Stay in Cornwall.
