Christmas Time the Gift of Giving
Christmas is about the giving of gifts, love and kindness. We spend hours, days and weeks choosing the perfect gifts for our fiends and family. Some of us struggle and find it hard to be inspired. It’s tough, in this age of immediacy, when everyone buys that must have item, when they want. The days of having to wait to see what Santa brings you are long gone (yes I’m getting old haha!).
I’ve never really been one for making a list, I prefer to be surprised by the gifts people give me. However, I’m lucky, Mr SLT is pretty good at buying me presents.
I love looking at Christmas gift guides, there’s one for every type of person and pet, you find inspiration and things you would never have come across before. You also lust after those, expensive, gifts which look fabulous but let’s be honest, they are just way too expensive!
Gifts That Keep on Giving
But what about a Christmas Gift Guide full of dog inspired gifts that give back?
In the UK, last year, the Dogs Trust took a shocking 1,000 calls after the Christmas period, from people saying they couldn’t cope with their dogs! Even worse, 127 dogs were dropped at Dogs Trust shelters around the country in the two week Christmas period, many of them puppies.
So, wouldn’t it be great to buy a gift for the dog lover in your life, that gives back? That gives to the rescue centres, and charities, that re-home so many unwanted, neglected and, sometimes, abused dogs who find themselves without a loving home through no fault of their own.
Here are some great suggestions to help you do just that, for the gifts that keep on giving.
We have a soft spot for the Wild at Heart Foundation because they brought beautiful Sandy into our lives. They don’t only re-home dogs, they also fund animal welfare projects all over the world. With a goal to compassionately reduce the world’s 600 million stray dog population by organising rescue projects, neutering programmes and education initiatives.
To help them raise money to do this, they have some fab Christmas sweatshirts, designed by Simeon Farrar x Black Score. Not only do you get a fabulous dog inspired sweatshirt but, 100% of the proceeds go directly to the Foundation. The sweatshirts are 100% Fairtrade cotton and the designs are unique and fun! The adult sweatshirts are £50 and the kids are £35.
There are 3 fabulous designs to choose from, I’m sure you know a dog owner who would rock one of these.
Three simple words drive everything they do at I Heart Dogs; ‘Every Dog Matters’. I came across this site via Facebook a while ago and now follow their blog and what they do for dogs. They have a vast online shop, but I think the items that caught my eye initially, were the dog inspired jewellery. At I Heart Dogs, every purchase matters, because every purchase supports a cause and makes an impact daily.
Below is the impact made of each and every purchase to November 2017, in the US, how amazing is this?
- 9,553,955 meals donated to animal shelters
- 50,995 toys donated for shelter dogs
- US$925,525 raised to provide US Veterans with service dogs
- US$929,234 raised for Hurricane Harvey & Irma relief and;
- 24,876 miles of transport rescuing pets from kill shelters.
They have hoodies, t-shirts, bracelets, mugs, toys for your dogs, chews & treats for your dog and much more! The best bit, every item in the shop tells you what buying the product will do, e.g. feed shelter dogs, provide miles to save a pet or buy 1 toy for a shelter dog.
With such choice and a great cause, why wouldn’t you buy something from I Heart Dogs? They also ship internationally.
Radley London, the well known makers of luxury handbags and purses have teamed up with Dogs Trust to create three collectable leather coin purses and a natural tote, all with their iconic dog designs. All profits are donated straight to Dogs Trust* (equates to 15% of the sale price), so you know you’ve helped thousands of dogs with your purchase too!
All Dogs Matter rescue and rehome dogs in and around London and the home counties. They are a small team of passionate animal lovers who work with several local council authorities to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome the many abandoned dogs that come in everyday.
Their ADM 2018 Calendar and ‘Joie Des Chiens’ sweatshirts are sold in aid of their dogs. With all proceeds of both items going to help more dogs in need. The sweatshirt comes in four colours (navy, maroon, black and grey) and are super snuggly, just perfect for winter dog walks!
